(Summary description)When changing from high-intensity discharge devices (HID) to LED lights , one of the most common mistakes that growers usually make is to watering too much. HID lighting generates a lot of heat, and the infrared level is high, thus more watering is required. However, the LED grow lights don’t generate the same heat and there is no infrared light. Therefore, when replacing HID lighting with LED lights, we have to observe the soil water consumption to avoid excessive watering.

  1. Pay close attention to soil water consumption

When changing from high-intensity discharge devices (HID) to LED lights , one of the most common mistakes that growers usually make is to watering too much.

  1. Turn on the heater.

When using HID lights, the demand for greenhouse heat always depends on the strong heat of HID lights. However, LED lights cannot generate the same heat as HID lights. It means that if LED lights are used to replace HID lights, to ensure the healthy growth of crops, growers must pay attention to increasing the greenhouse temperature. Greenhouse heating facilities will bring a certain cost, while LEDs are more energy-efficient and efficient, so the overall cost is still reduced.

  1. Pay attention to installation height.

Although everyone cares speed now, it need us to take extra time to determine the precise installation height, which can maximize efficiency and increase crop yield and quality. There are many environmental factors that need to be considered when installing LED lights, including whether there is sufficient natural light. The accurate installation height can ensure the maximum illumination range, uniform illumination distribution and if the light can penetrate the canopy in a concentrated manner. If the LED light is installed too high, the light coverage is increased, but the light intensity will be reduced, while if the installation height is too low, high-intensity light will affect crop growth. Therefore, when installing LED lights, you’d better ask professional help from the manufacturer. On the basis of understanding the daily light in the greenhouse, then we can design the installation plan according to local condition.

  1. Installing multiple lights

LED grow light can illuminate specific targets by adopting optical kits. Thanks to this advantage, growers can use LED lights to illuminate the specific crop areas. However, it is very beneficial to install more sets of LED lights during installation. The light overlap between the lights will help to maximize the lighting and ensure the sufficient. Although the installation cost will increase, it is still cost-effective in the long run.

  1. Setting the light cycle.

The setting of the light cycle determines the growth of the crop. Growers can increase or decrease the light time to allow crops to grow according to the expected growth cycle.

The most common photoperiod during flower growth is 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness. The 12/12 photoperiod will promote flowering, because darkness is a sign of the arrival of autumn for flowers. If there is insufficient light and the darkness is too long, the flowers will bloom in large numbers. For nutritious crops (such as herbs and leaf vegetables), 17-18 hours of light per day is the most suitable.

  1. Setting the light cycle.

Just as you can control the light cycle of the LED, you can also control the lighting time under different spectrum (blue, white, red, far infrared). Different spectrum will bring different effects on crop growth. Choosing an appropriate ratio of red and blue light is beneficial to crop growth. For example: Infrared rays have been proven to reduce flower flowering cycle and shorten flower harvest.
