        1.Thermal management is the major problem in high-brightness LED applications.

Because the p-type doping of group III nitrides is limited by the solubility of the Mg acceptor and the higher activation energy of the holes, the heat is particularly to be generated in the p-type region, and this heat must be conducted to the heat sink through the entire structure. The main heat dissipation of LED devices is conduction and convection, the extremely low thermal conductivity of Sapphire substrate materials leads to an increase of thermal resistance of the device, which will generate a serious self-heating effect, and it will bring a devastating effect on the performance and reliability.

 

       2.Influence of heat on high-brightness LED

The heat is concentrated in a LED chip with a tiny size. The chip temperature rises will cause a non-uniform distribution of thermal stress, and the drop of the chip luminous efficiency and phosphor lasing efficiency. When the temperature exceeds a certain value, the device failure rate increases exponentially. There are some statistics show that while the component temperature rises by 2°C, the reliability drops by 10%. When multiple LEDs are densely arranged to build a white light illumination system, the problem of heat dissipation is more serious. Thus, solving thermal management problems has become a prerequisite for high-brightness LED lighting applications.

 

      3.The relationship between LED chip size and heat dissipation

The most direct way to increase the brightness of the power LED lighting fixtures is to increase the input power, and in order to prevent the saturation of the active layer, the size of the PN junction must be correspondingly increased. At the same time, increasing the input power will inevitably increase the junction temperature, and thus the quantum efficiency will be reduced.
