Choosing the best lighting system is not practical for those on a budget. We just need to choose the right lighting according to the size of the hydroponic system and the type of plants being grown. A good choice is often more important than a good lighting system.

Typically, plants need around 8 hours of sunlight per day. Therefore, as a substitute for sunlight, our artificial light source must ensure 14-16 hours of lighting supply a day. Then there are 10 to 12 hours of darkness a day. Darkness is as important as light, and plants also need time to rest and metabolize.

For perennials, the light setting is even more important to keep the plant through the growing and flowering seasons. The easiest way to control time is to use a timer. Because a small mistake has the potential to affect plant growth and productivity.

Next, share the different growth times that different plants need:

1. Short-day plants: These plants do not need light for a long time, they need most of the time in the dark to photosynthesize and flower. If they are exposed to more than 12 hours of light a day, they will not bloom. Poinsettia, strawberries, cauliflower, and chrysanthemums are short-day plants. Short-day plants should follow nature's laws and plant flowers in the spring.

2. Long-day plants: Plants such as wheat, lettuce, potatoes, spinach, and radishes are long-day plants that require more than 18 hours of sunlight per day. Long-day plants should provide them with a growth environment similar to summer flowering plants.

3. Day Neutral Plants: These plants are the most flexible. They will bear fruit regardless of the light level. Examples include rice, eggplant, rose and corn.

If you decide to mix short-day and long-day plants in one growing system, it's best to compromise their needs and choose a lighting schedule that's right in the middle, with about 14 hours of light per day.
