We all know that LED grow lights can promote the growth of plants. For most plants, the light given by the grow light is uniform. But with creeping vines, such as cucumbers and tomatoes, overhead lights are not enough. Therefore, for climbing vines, scientists have developed interlighting grow light. Today, we will explain an experiment to experience the effect of interlighting on climbing vines.   

A farm in Canada, in order to increase the production of cucumbers, decided to conduct experiments with LED interlighting. A total of 16 interlighting modules in four rows were installed in the experiment, which were mixed with the existing HPS lighting system. The interlighting module supplements the light for the leaves at a close distance, improves the uniformity of the light, and stimulates the growth potential of the plants.

In addition to natural light and auxiliary high-pressure sodium lighting, two rounds of production were carried out with the supplementary application of LED interlighting modules. The control group only used natural light and high pressure sodium lighting. Using LED interlighting with an optimized spectrum for a specific crop preserves leaf physiological activity. Since this lighting technology is highly concentrated to improve light, it provides supplementary light for a specific part of the crop, that is, the middle of the plant, without light loss to the ground or other spaces, maximizing utilization. LED lighting is also very energy efficient and has a higher energy efficiency. The surface temperature during operation is only around 50 degrees Celsius, with minimal disturbance to plant production.    

The result of the experiment is that after applying LED interlighting to supplement light, the average yield can be increased by 19% (kg/m2), and only 8% of additional light can be added. This shows that the LED light is used efficiently.

The increase in yield can be reflected in two aspects: accelerated fruit ripening and slightly larger fruit. In addition, the position and size of the leaves are also different: the color of the leaves in the LED test group is darker and smaller, the inclination angle between the leaves and the stem will be smaller, and there are more leaves in the direction of the LED than without supplementary light. At the end of a season, it can be seen that the physiological vitality of the crop is stronger.

Farmers believe that more yield increases can be achieved when irrigation and climate can be optimally controlled in conjunction with light. Because supplementary lighting increases the photosynthetic activity of plants, the demand for various elements such as water, nutrients, and CO2 will be enhanced.

The test results show that the hybrid lighting system with LED interplant fill light can increase the yield of crops by absorbing more effective light. Especially in winter, this type of supplemental light provides better growing conditions for plants. The growth of crops can be well regulated even in summer.
